Weather Control

Capture weather nodes to flash-freeze oceans, trap enemy fleets in ice, and reshape battlefield terrain in Sanctuary Shattered Sun.

Weather Control

On the inner surface of Sanctuary’s Dyson sphere, weather is a weapon. Scattered across each map are weather nodes — strategic landmarks that grant the controlling player influence over local climate. Capture them, invest Flux, and you can flash-freeze oceans, trap fleets in ice, summon storms over enemy production lines, or clear fog to expose hidden flanks. Weather control turns geography from static scenery into a dynamic front line.

This mechanic separates Sanctuary from traditional land-only RTS games. Naval engagements, amphibious landings, and coastal expansions all hinge on who owns the sky above the water.

Weather Nodes

Weather nodes appear as distinct structures or map features, often placed near coastlines, choke points, or high ground. To capture a node:

  1. Move ground or air units into the capture radius
  2. Hold the zone until capture completes (contested nodes pause progress)
  3. Maintain a presence or leave a garrison — rules vary by map, but losing the node ends your weather effects after a short delay

Each node has a weather type and potency tier. Demo maps typically include at least one cryo node near open water and one storm node over industrial zones. Scout early with recon drones (Guard excels here) to plan your opening.

Flash-Freezing Oceans

The signature weather play is flash-freeze: a cryo node converts liquid water into transitable ice for a limited duration. Effects include:

  • Naval lockdown — enemy ships trapped until the ice melts or is broken
  • New land bridges — your ground army crosses where no path existed
  • Extractor denial — offshore platforms become unreachable without airlift

Timing matters. Freeze too early and the ice melts before your push arrives. Freeze during an enemy naval rotation and you strand their fleet mid-map. Pair freezes with Attack Move ground advances for maximum payoff.

Flash-freeze also interacts with Superweapons: a cracked seabed from earth-shattering weapons may not refreeze cleanly, creating permanent terrain changes.

Trapping Fleets in Ice

When a fleet enters a zone targeted for flash-freeze, ships do not sink — they are immobilized in ice. Immobilized units can still fire in many cases but cannot reposition, making them easy prey for artillery or air strikes.

Counter-play exists:

  • Air carriers and hover units ignore ice in most Demo scenarios
  • Chosen shield ships survive the initial freeze burst better than EDA bulk transports
  • Preemptive weather capture denies the enemy the node before they commit to a naval push

Use How to Control Weather for step-by-step Demo scenarios on the coastal skirmish map.

Storms, Fog, and Microclimate

Not every node freezes water. Storm nodes disrupt air production and accuracy; fog nodes hide army movements; heat nodes (where present) accelerate melt and counter cryo strategies. Layering effects — storm over a frozen strait — creates chaos that favors players with superior recon.

The Guard faction leverages weather best through cheap scouts and expendable spotters, while Chosen prefer shielded pushes through storms that would shred lighter armies.

Economy and Flux Cost

Weather abilities are not free. Activating a flash-freeze or storm pulse drains Flux for the duration of the effect and during cooldown. Spamming weather without income leads to recession — the same overspend trap that punishes over-queuing factories.

Budget weather like a superweapon timing: secure income, capture the node, strike when the enemy commits elsewhere.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I capture a weather node?

Move units into the capture radius and hold until capture completes. Contested nodes pause progress — bring enough force to secure the zone.

Can flash-freeze trap my own ships?

Yes. Friendly units in the target zone are also immobilized. Plan freeze timing so your fleet has exited or your ground push uses the ice bridge instead.

Does weather control cost resources?

Yes. Weather abilities drain Flux during activation and cooldown. Overspending can trigger recession like any other expenditure.

Which faction benefits most from weather?

Guard benefits from cheap recon for node control; EDA punishes trapped fleets with artillery; Chosen survives storms with shields. See the Faction Tier List.

Can ice be permanent?

Standard flash-freeze is temporary. Map-altering superweapons may create lasting terrain changes that interact with weather.
