Superweapons

Earth-cracking superweapons, permanent map alteration, and the nuke-vs-shield dynamics that define late-game Sanctuary Shattered Sun matches.

Superweapons

Late-game Sanctuary matches escalate from skirmishes to existential strikes. Superweapons are massive installations — particle lances, crust-breakers, orbital rods — that cost enormous Flux, take minutes to charge, and can alter the map permanently. A successful superweapon hit does not just delete units; it cracks earth, floods valleys, opens new choke points, and forces both players to rewrite their strategy on the fly.

Understanding superweapons means understanding timing, map deformation, and the nuke versus shield triangle that defines faction matchups.

Building and Charging

Superweapons are constructed like other structures but with stricter requirements:

  • Tech tier — typically mid-to-late game after advanced factories are online
  • Flux drain — continuous expenditure during construction and charge (see Flux Economy)
  • Vulnerability — the structure is a priority target; losing it wastes invested resources

Charge progress is visible to both players through audio cues and UI warnings. Scout enemy build zones — a hidden superweapon is the most common Demo comeback story.

Earth-Cracking and Map Alteration

The defining superweapon effect is earth-crack: targeted terrain deforms, creating cliffs, rubble fields, or new water channels. Unlike cosmetic destruction, these changes persist for the rest of the match.

Strategic uses:

  • Split an enemy blob by cracking the ground under a consolidated army
  • Deny expansions by destroying flat build pads
  • Open shortcuts for your own flank if you aim carefully
  • Interact with weather — cracked seabeds may not refreeze (see Weather Control)

Map alteration punishes players who memorize static build orders. After a superweapon strike, revisit Wreck Reclamation — cracked zones often litter high-value salvage.

Nukes vs Shields

The classic counter triangle appears in Demo skirmishes as kinetic/orbital strikes vs energy shields:

  • Raw damage weapons (nuclear analogues, crust-breakers) deliver burst damage in a radius
  • Shield networks (Chosen specialty) absorb or attenuate the first strike
  • Shield overload — sustained or stacked strikes collapse shields and leave units exposed

EDA favors multiple smaller superweapon equivalents or artillery saturation to strip shields before the killing blow. Guard may sacrifice forward bases to bait a charge. Chosen players must pre-position shield projectors before the enemy charge completes.

There is no hard counter button — success is intel plus economy. If you know a nuke is charging and you cannot stop it, spend Flux on shield reinforcement or evacuate high-value King Pieces before impact.

Interaction with Commanders

Superweapon strikes often target command clusters. Because King Piece death equals loss, a well-aimed crack can force a commander relocation into open ground — or end the match if Second Wind was already spent.

Protect commanders with redundant shield bubbles and avoid stacking them on deformable terrain.

Economic Commitment

Superweapons are Flux black holes. Building one during recession is suicidal unless you have a decisive advantage. Treat them like all-in bets:

  1. Secure income nodes
  2. Pause nonessential queues
  3. Charge while the enemy is distracted by weather or a flank
  4. Follow up immediately — a cracked map means nothing without army pressure

Faction Approaches

FactionSuperweapon Style
EDAOverwhelming firepower, follow-up tank push
GuardExperimental weapons, map chaos with drones
ChosenShielded charge sites, counter-strike after enemy waste

Demo and Early Access Notes

The pre-alpha Demo includes at least one superweapon prototype per faction line. Expect charge times, damage radii, and shield interactions to receive balance passes during Early Access. Record enemy superweapon timings in your notes — future patches may not change the fundamental map crack identity, but numeric tuning will shift what counts as a guaranteed kill versus a shielded graze.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do superweapons permanently change the map?

Yes. Earth-crack effects persist for the rest of the match, creating new cliffs, rubble, and water channels.

Can shields stop a superweapon?

Shields can absorb or reduce initial damage, especially Chosen shield networks. Stacked or repeated strikes overload shields.

How much Flux does a superweapon cost?

Construction and charging drain Flux continuously. Budget like a major expansion and avoid starting one during recession.

Can the enemy see my superweapon charging?

Yes. Charge progress comes with UI and audio warnings for both players — scout enemy bases to respond early.

Do superweapons kill commanders instantly?

They can if the commander is in the blast zone and shields fail. King Piece death ends the match — evacuate or shield before impact.
